What Are the Signs of a Strep Infection?

Strep throat is an extremely common infection in children, especially in the late fall and early spring. It can be easily and quickly diagnosed in a pediatric urgent care center through a simple throat swab. If strep throat is diagnosed within the first 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, the urgent care pediatrician can prescribe antibiotics to lessen the length of the infection and the severity of the symptoms, so a fast diagnosis is important. If you notice any of these signs of strep throat, take your child to a pediatric urgent care clinic as soon as possible.

Sore Throat

A sore throat is the most obvious and common symptom of strep. Typically, the pain comes on very quickly, rather than building over the course of several days. Your child may complain about painful swallowing, and you may be able to see swollen tonsils with patches of pus if you look in his or her throat. You may also be able to see red spots along the roof of the mouth, near where it connects to the throat.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

Strep throat frequently causes the lymph nodes in the neck to become swollen. Even if you can't see swelling on your child's neck, his or her lymph nodes may become tender. If you gently press on your child's neck, he or she may complain about the aching pain that occurs when you touch his or her lymph nodes.

Rash

When a rash occurs with a sore throat, your child should be evaluated by a pediatrician. In addition to indicating a simple case of strep throat, a rash combined with a sore throat can also indicate that the strep infection is causing a potentially serious inflammatory response in your child, such as scarlet fever or rheumatic fever.
