What to Do When Your Child Has Food Poisoning

Food poisoning can make your little one miserable, thanks to a sudden onset of severe vomiting and diarrhea. Although food poisoning can often be managed at home, in some cases, urgent care is necessary to avoid complications. If you think your child has food poisoning, here are some steps you can take to help him or her recover.

Know the Signs

Food poisoning can cause upset stomach, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, depending on the organism that is responsible for the poisoning. Generally, symptoms start within a few hour of eating a contaminated food. Because these symptoms are associated with many different illnesses, monitor your child closely and go to a pediatric after-hours clinic for an accurate diagnosis, if necessary.

Provide At-Home Care

Kids with food poisoning usually get better on their own after a few days. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest as his or her body fights the infection. Avoiding dehydration is critical, so encourage him or her to take small sips of fluids frequently. Water or electrolyte solutions will help, but avoid providing milk or any beverage that contains caffeine. Your child should avoid solid food and dairy items until his or her diarrhea has ended. Over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medicines can actually make food poisoning symptoms persist for longer, so it is better to let the infection run its course.

Get Medical Treatment

If your child shows signs of dehydration, such as infrequent urination, dizziness, or sunken eyes, or if he or she experiences bloody vomit or diarrhea, go to an urgent care facility for evaluation. You should also go an urgent care for kids if your child's fever is over 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
