Teaching Your Kids About Handwashing

If you were to ask an after hours pediatrician about the top two things you can do to protect your children from diseases, he or she would likely bring up immunizations and handwashing. Children are endlessly curious and busy, and they tend to touch everything within arm’s reach—including their mouth, eyes, and nose. This gives germs an easy pathway to infect the mucous membranes. Help your child understand the spread of germs by talking about how touching an object, like a doorknob, can transfer disease-causing germs to people.

Kids need constant reminders to wash their hands before eating, after using the toilet, and after sneezing or coughing. Help your children learn the right technique by demonstrating it with your own hands, and then guiding your children in copying your movements.

Pediatrics After Hours is an ER for kids serving the DFW area that helps young patients feel well again when cold symptoms or the flu strikes. Find one of our four locations near you by calling (214) 363-7242.
