Often, a sore throat is not cause for alarm. When your child’s sore throat is caused by a cold, you can comfort him or her by offering warm liquids such as chicken broth or tea, and encouraging him or her to get plenty of rest. Sometimes, however, a sore throat requires the attention of an emergency pediatrician. If you detect the symptoms of strep throat or tonsillitis, it’s time to get your child ready for a trip to the urgent care facility.
Symptoms of a Cold
There is no cure for a sore throat caused by a cold virus; rather, you’ll simply have to let the cold run its course. Along with the sore throat, your child may complain of a mild headache or mild body aches if he or she has a cold. Sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose are also common.
Symptoms of Strep Throat
If your child displays signs of strep throat, an urgent care pediatrician and perform a simple diagnostic test to check for the presence of streptococcus bacteria. If the strep test is positive, the pediatrician can prescribe antibiotics. Symptoms of strep throat can easily be mistaken for symptoms of the common cold. However, strep throat is more severe and can cause a sudden sore throat, painful swallowing, loss of appetite, and fever. If you ask your child to open his or her mouth, you may see that the tonsils appear red with white spots.
Symptoms of Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis refers to the inflammation of the tonsils. This condition may be caused by either bacteria or viruses. If you suspect your child could have tonsillitis, a pediatrician at the urgent care center can prescribe antibiotics, provided the condition is caused by bacteria. The symptoms of tonsillitis can include fever, painful swallowing, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and bad breath. You may also notice that your child’s voice changes due to the swelling.
